Protection from Rot, Mold, Termites

I checked out a green living store in West Hollywood yesterday called Vernare. The store is awesome, filled with really cool green building materials and custom furniture pieces designed by owner Dan Vandenbark. His retail space is very tranquil, half garden half showroom. Definitely worth poking your head in for anyone walking by (Melrose and Huntley).

I met Dan a few months ago at the LA Green Expo and had meant to follow up with him much earlier than I did actually. He showed me all the green building materials they sell, from Kirei Board, compressed MDF and sunflower husk cabinetry to bamboo and cork flooring to Limestone plaster and American Clay for wall finishes. The product that caught my eye the most, however, was BluWood.

BluWood is a factory-applied, two part wood protection system made out of a Borate substance that protects wood from mold, rot, termites. It can be used for all framing lumber, trusses and sheathing components. The BluWood treatment, the company says, allows existing water to evaporate but prevents new water from coming in.

Looks like a perfect product to use for our project...
